The history of the Vastseliina Episcopal Castle dates back to the 14th century and it was a strong border fortress between Russia and Europe until the end of the 17th century. During the Middle Ages, the bishop's castle was one of the destinations of pilgrimages in the Catholic world. The castle was destroyed in 1702 during the Great Northern War. However, the building material from the destroyed fortress was later used to build surrounding buildings. Thus, in the 19th century, a tavern and a smithy were built from stones belonging to the manor.
To this day, pilgrims come to the holy site of the fortress, which has gained fame through the miracle of the White Cross. In the ruins park, visitors can climb the castle tower, light a candle in the miraculous place or enjoy night concerts in the bonfires between the castle walls.
The Neuhausen main house, opened in the former Piiri tavern building, presents a variety of exhibits related to the history of the castle, an exhibition based on local legends, craft workshops, concerts and performances in the old tavern room, and the opportunity to partake in a medieval feast dressed in medieval costumes. In the pilgrim's house one can learn about the history of pilgrimage.
The Old-Vastseliina Manor Park near the castle was established in 1830 by the former owner of the manor, Guido Reinhold von Liphart. Today, the park is home to a bandstand and hosts folk parties. Several hiking trails start from here.
