Bird area of the Räpina polder

The largest polder area in Estonia lies near the southern end of Lake Peipsi, at the shore of Lämmijärv Lake. The polder is cut off from the lake by a 10 km-long safety dam. The total length of the ditches in the drainage system arrives at almost 80 km. The polder area that annualy becomes flooded in spring is apparently the best bird area in Estonia. Of the migrating birds the dipper ducks and white-fronted geese are the most abundant. Hatchers, corncrake, black tern and little gull especially, are also very numerous. A number of rare species such as white-winged black tern, citrine wagtail and little crake can be met quite regularly.
