Laidevahe Nature Reserve

The Laidevahe Nature Reserve may be not easy to find but it is a real treasure for people fond of nature. It is one of the most interesting protected areas in Saaremaa. All natural and semi-natural communities characteristic of the southern part of Saaremaa are represented here. The area of high landscape diversity features coastal meadows, semi-open alvars with juniper stands, fragments of wooded meadows, fens overgrown with the fen sedge, coastal lakes enclosed by reed beds, small bays with curved coastline, islets, broad-leaved forests and pine forests. The indigenous horse breed, the Estonian native horses are kept on extensive coastal meadows of Laidevahe and Siiksaare.

The high diversity of communities is a basis for species-rich vegetation and invertebrate fauna, but it also provides habitats for snakes, frogs and mammals. The varied coastal landscape with lots of wetlands tempts huge amounts of waterfowl to stop during their migration, but also hatchers are abundant.
