Vardi Alvar Forest
Vardi Alvar Forest

In several places in Northern and Western Estonia there are fragments of alvar forests with good light conditions and sparse but diverse undergrowth. One of the most representative of these areas is included in the Vardi Nature Reserve. The thin soil layer of 30 cm or less lying on the limestone bedrock is the most characteristic feature of habitats in alvar forests. The dominant tree species is pine but also spruce, birch and oak stands can be met. The age of pines in the Vardi alvar forest may reach 200 years. Junipers, rowans, honeysuckles and filberts are the most common undergrowth species. Once felled down, alvar forests do not normally recover. Thus, these communities can be regarded as historical relicts with high protection value. As a plant community, alvar forest is rather susceptible. However, as a forest stand it is quite resistant since its slow-growing trees are short and thick and tightly anchored to the land by roots.
