Aegviidu-Nelijärve Area
Aegviidu-Nelijärve Area

Light pine forests, varying relief, numerous lakes and mires full of wild berries have always magnetized people to visit the Aegviidu-Nelijärve area all the year round. After the establishment of railway connection with the capital of Estonia in 1870 this region became an important recreation destination for people from Tallinn. Unlike the railroad the roads around Aegviidu are very meandering resulting from undulating terrain. The road makes a large curve near Nelijärve, at the beginning of a 10 km long esker directed from northwest to southeast. Such a position suggests the direction of the channel in the glacier of the last ice age. There are seven lakes in esker depressions, i.e. in places where huge ice blocks were situated. The toponym Nelijärve (‘Four Lakes’) derives from the fact that four lakes can be seen at once from the top of one of the hillocks.
