Emajõe Suursoo Mire
Emajõe Suursoo Mire

Extensive mires occupying an area of some 250 km² in the delta area of the mouth of the Emajõgi River lie in the Peipsi Lowland. The mires started to form already after the retreat of the ice sheet, the share of bogs in this huge mire complex is still moderate due to the crustal sinking. The main mire types represented here are transition mires and fens that in spring high-water period become annually flooded. The mire area has more than 80 mire islands and eight lakes. South from the Suursoo Mire extensive forests of Peravalla appear. It is very complicated to access the Suursoo Mire by foot. The best way to explore the place is to take a boat. The area has impressive bird life during the migration period. Huge amounts of fish come to spawn in the lakes connected with Lake Peipsi. The flora is also interesting including some rare species such as Siberian iris, marsh gentian and yellow marsh saxifrage.
