Piirissaar Island

Piirisaar is the biggest island in Lake Peipsi under Estonian jurisdiction. It forms the second smallest local administrative unit after Ruhnu Island. There are three villages with about 100 inhabitants in the northeastern part of the island. For living local people go fishing and grow vegetables. The area of the island has decreased three times during the last couple of hundred years due to the neo-tectonic sinking of the ground in the central and southern part of Lake Peipsi. Majority of the island’s territory is occupied by swamps, amounting to the height of one metre from the lake level only. The wildlife has always been very rich in frogs. However, the population has decreased in recent years due to the overgrowth of grasslands with brushwood. Some shallow ponds have been established on the island to preserve the spawning grounds of green toad and spade foot toad.
