Pühajärv lake

There are many lakes with the name Pühajärv (‘Holy Lake’) in Estonia. The one located in the Otepää Upland is the most famous of them. It lies in the depression splitting the upland area into two parts. The curvilinear shoreline of Pühajärv Lake forms a number of peninsulas and bays, additionally, there are five islands covered with forests on the lake. The lake biota is pretty rich owing to many springs emerging in the bottom and slopes of the lake basin and the varying bottom relief. The lake macroflora comprises 34 different species.

One of the most celebrated events of the year takes place in winter. Thousands of fishermen participate in ice fishing. On the northern shore of the lake, in the heart of the old manor park the renowned Pühajärve Spa Hotel providing health services is located. There is a nice sunbathing and swimming place on a sandy beach lying quite close to the Spa Hotel. Many artists and poets have used the motives of Pühajärv Lake in their works. The place was especially famous among people involved in creative work in the early 20th century.
