Otepää Upland

The town of Otepää in the middle of the Otepää Upland is the highest-lying town in Estonia. Although the highest peaks of the upland do not usually exceed 200 metres all the features characteristic to moraine heights are present here, i.e. the varying relief, deep primeval valleys, numerous small lakes, and landscapes with mosaic land-use pattern.

Otepää has been a very popular winter sport resort not only among local skiers but also among some world’s best performers already for about fifty years. Compared to neighbouring areas the snow cover is thicker and lasts longer here due to higher altitudes. Like other moraine heights in Estonia the Otepää Upland tends to become overgrown. The share of arable land decreases and the tourism sector boosts increasingly.
