Piusa Primeval Valley

The Piusa River descending from the Haanja Upland is extremely rapid in the 15 km long river section starting at the ruins of the Vahtseliina Stronghold. The fall of the riverbed in some places is remarkable, reaching 7-8 metres per km. The valley cut into the Middle-Devonian sandstones has asymmetric profile: the bank on the right hand is steep having numerous sandstone outcrops. On the left side of the riverbank terraces can be noticed reflecting the former stages of water level of Lake Peipsi. The most outstanding sandstone cliff out of many is the Keldrimüür Wall where the white sandstone is exposed on steep riverbank forming a 43 metres high cliff. The Piusa River surprises those hiking on boats with several obstacles along the river, as several rapids and old milldams emerge on the route.
