Piusa sandstone caves

The sandstone caves at Piusa are man-made caves formed during the mining of sand for glass industry. The mining was launched in 1920s. At present, caves of the depleted sand mines are a popular tourist sight. Caves form long cave systems with up to 6 m-high ceilings leaning on sandstone pillars. There are also smaller cave systems with the area of less than 0.5 hectares. The tunnels were mined from above downwards. The underground mines were closed down in 1979. Since then bats have started to inhabit the caves. Five different bat species have been documented here, the number of wintering individuals is more than 3000. This figure makes the Piusa caves the biggest wintering colony of bats in Northern Europe. To protect the Piusa bat population only part of the cave system is open to visitors.
