Ilumetsa meteorite craters

Roughly 6,600 years ago a meteorite fell down in Ilumetsa. This is one of the six places in Estonia known as locations of craters formed by some celestial body. There are five craters in Ilumetsa. The most impressive of these is the Põrguhaud (‘Grave in Hell’) with the diametre of 80 metres and depth of 12 metres. The craters have oval shape, distinct wall and fractured substrate. The latter is the main proof of the fall-down of the meteorite. The impact of the destructive shock reaches as deep as 40 metres at the main crater. The meteorite fell from the west as indicated by the height of the eastern wall of the crater. There is a 3-4 m-thick peat layer at the bottom of the main crater. Probably due to the very sparse settlement in the area the craters are not well-known. However, some legends have been told. The craters were believed to represent the devil´s home. Nowadays wooden sculptures set up in the area convey ancient beliefs.
