Peetri River

In the very southern end of Estonia, in the one km-section of the Peetri River, an interesting variability of sandstones and limestones can be seen. At the Karisöödi Park the white and yellowish sandstones of the Upper-Devonian Amata formation are exposed. A bit further upstream, at the Kalkahju farmstead, the clay dolomites representing the Plavinas formation can be noticed in the outcrop. Thus, the national rock symbol, common in North Estonia emerges again in South Estonia, although as a narrow belt and in younger formations. Resulting from the nearground position of limestone the karst features are present in the region of the Peetri River, that are missing anywhere else in Estonia. The river valley has also some botanical peculiarities, as the herb-rich forests with the dominant species such as wych elm, European white elm, littleleaf linden and maple occurring here are normally more characteristic of areas lying further in the south. This is also the only area where habitats of European spindle can be found in Estonia.
