Luhasoo Mire

The Luhasoo Mire is peculiar for representing all development stages of mires. The wettest (of these) is the fen zone providing good habitats for orchids. In the transition mire pines, reeds and cranberries come into sight. The common bog plants include crowberry, sheated cottonsedge, and cloudberry. The increasing peat layers have lifted up the central part of the bog. It lies several metres higher than the surrounding areas. There are three lakes in the middle of the bog. The largest of them is Mustjärv Lake with the area of 7 ha. Water in these lakes is dark, soft and acidulous. It is safe to drink it but it does not take away the thirst. Several mineral bog islands, the relicts of former mounds, become gradually buried under the peat. During different wars people have traditionally used these islands as shelters.
