Karula National Park

The Karula National Park was established in the most characteristic part of the Karula Upland. The landscape is dominated by countless number of hills formed in the late glacial period surrounded by numerous lakes, mires, streams and plains. The most typical mounds are located in the area of Kaika and Lüllemäe. The Tornimägi Hill, the highest one in the upland with the height of 137 metres is situated near Lüllemäe. The cultural landscape of the Karula Upland features sparse settlement pattern with narrow fields and plots of forests and mires, meadows and farmsteads that all give the landscape a particular intimate look. The largest forests of South Estonia lie here. There are 38 lakes within the area. The visiting centre of the national park lies in close proximity to Lake Ähijärv, the biggest lake here.
