Koiva wooded meadow

The Koiva wooded meadow at the Koiva River on the border between Estonia and Latvia is one of the very few wooded meadows preserved in floodplain areas. The vegetation of flooded wooded meadows is quite different from the of that calcareous wooded meadows spread in western Estonia. Old oaks decorate the landscape in the Koiva wooded meadow. Several plant and animal species characteristic of Central Europe can be found here. Particularly remarkable are some rare insects, e.g. the hermit beetle and musk beetle residing in decaying trunks of old oaks. The Koiva wooded meadow together with the nearby Vaitka wooded meadow is a designated protected area. Unfortunatelly, the meadows of this area have not been taken care of regularly, however the hikers still have enjoyable experiences while making acquaintance with these communities.

The Koiva River is popular among boat-hikers who often head downstream from here to reach the rapids and sandstone cliffs in Latvia.
