Võrtsjärv Lake
Võrtsjärv Lake

Võrtsjärv Lake, occupying an area of 270 km², is the biggest inland waterbody in Estonia. The lake receives its water mostly from the Väike-Emajõgi River. It also has an outflow where the Suur Emajõgi River springs out. The average depth of the lake is 2.8 metres. The water near the shore is shallow and swimmers have to walk long before being able to swim. The shoreline of a bit less than 100 km is very curvilinear with lots of reed beds. There are only few islands, the most famous of which is Tondisaar Island. The most well-known areas where migrating birds stop are situated in the southern end of the lake and on the Väike-Rakke polder in the northeastern part of the lake. The migrating smews are particularly abundant in this area. Võrtsjärv suffers from strong eutrophication and great variance of water level. The fish fauna of the lake is related with Lake Peipsi through the Emajõgi River. Altogether 36 fish species have been caught from Võrtsjärv Lake. On the eastern shore the Limnology Station of Võrtsjärv Lake is situated. The museum dedicated to the lake will be opened here soon.
