Abruka Island

Abruka Island lies some six kilometres south of Kuressaare. The territory of Abruka covers nearly 10 km². The most famous sight on the island is its broad-leaved forest, the relict community from the warm climatic stage of ancient time. The forest comprises oaks, ashes, lindens, maples and birches. The undergrowth dominated by filberts is appreciated not only by local community; many people from Kuressaare come to pick hazelnuts. The undergrowth is mainly composed of common species of herb-rich forests. Rare orchids, e.g. the pyramidal orchid and ghost orchid, can be found in the glades and at the edges of the forest. Besides, also alder swamps can be seen present and deers can be met on the island. On the seashore there are several coastal meadows with swamps attracting the Charadiiformes species and ducks. It is possible to take a boat to Abruka Island from the Roomassaare Harbour in Kuressaare.
