Sõrve Peninsula

A tour around the 32 km long Sõrve Peninsula in the southwestern end of Saaremaa Island offers excitement for the whole day. In the largest part of the peninsula the road follows the coastline. On the eastern shore the Viieristi Nature Reserve is located. Its coastal terraces and spring fens boast many rare plant species. The very end of the peninsula, the Sõrve spit with a grand lighthouse, is the most visited place in this region. This is one of the best places for bird-watchers to observe the autumn migration since a migratory corridor goes through it. The western shore of the peninsula has several low-lying limestone escarpments, e.g. in Ohessaare, Lõu and Kaugatuma. Interesting plant communities appear further in the north – first the Lõu Alvar with very thin or absent soil layer but with extremely rich flora and then the Rahuste coastal meadow.

After leaving the peninsula the road continues further to northwest along the coast full of variety.
