Loode oak forest

The Loode oak forest near Kuressaare, the capital of Saaremaa, is an old natural stand of broad-leaved trees. Once the area included wooded meadows and pastures, these have been replaced by the park-like grove that is very popular recreation area among city dwellers. The species diversity is a very high. The yellow lady’s slipper and many other orchids can be seen here. At the seaside a watching tower giving splendid views over Kurassaare Bay has been established on the coastal meadow. North of the oak forest there are three lakes, the former marine areas – Linnulaht, Suurlaht and Mullutu – with extensive reed beds and high bird abundance.
