Kallaste Cliff

The Kallaste Cliff in the eastern part of Hiiumaa Island forms a 400 metres long and up to 10 metres high limestone outcrop. On the top of the cliff lies a stand of old pine trees hiding the forest trail going along the cliff. In the southern part of the outcrop the bioherm reef formed of corals and marine invertebrates is exposed. Many rare fern species as well as flowering plants grow in the limestone cracks. Not far from here, in Hagaste there are nice alvar meadows and small calcareous mires providing habitats for massive amount of orchids. According to the legend, the Kallaste Cliff was used by Old Devil as a smithy for making weapons for the Estonians during their ancient war for independence.
