Puhtu–Laelatu Nature Reserve

The area of Laelatu and Puhtu near Virtsu has great botanical value. One can make a visit there before taking the ferry to Saaremaa Island or after returning from Saaremaa.

Puhtu is a former islet that has joined the mainland and has become a peninsula partly owing to the crustal uplift and partly due to human activities. An old and herb-rich deciduous forest can be seen here. The area is renowned also for its importance for migrating birds. During the spring migration over two million long-tailed ducks, common scoters and white-winged scoters have been counted in one evening only.

The nearby coastal meadow of Laelatu is well-known among those interested in botany. The Laelatu coastal meadow is considered to be one of the most species-rich plant communities in Europe with the record of 76 different species per one square metre.
