Väinameri Sea

The Väinameri Sea is a shallow twisty part of the North-Estonian coastal sea with numerous islets lying between the four bigger islands of Estonia (Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhu, Vormsi) and the mainland.

Compared to the open sea areas the Väinameri Sea is calmer, the salinity is lower and the ice cover in winter is thicker. This sea area is very scenic and attracts sailors and fishermen. The small islands and islets of the area also magnetize tourists.

Huge number of birds nest on small islets. Among other species common eider, white-winged scoter and cormorants are very common. Hundreds of thousands of migrating long-tailed ducks and white-winged scoters rest on the Väinameri Sea. Many islets provide good resting places for ringed seal. The area includes parts of Matsalu National Park and the Hiiumaa Islets’ Landscape Reserve.
