Silma Nature Reserve

The Silma Nature Reserve embraces the coastal lakes and bays with extensive reedbeds between Haapsalu and the Noarootsi Peninsula. The Silma Nature Reserve is the second most important bird area in West Estonia after Matsalu Bay. The visiting centre of the protected area is situated in the Saare (Lyckholm) manor in the Noarootsi Peninsula. The Sutlepa Sea, the biggest coastal lake in this area, is located not far from the visiting centre. Nice huts made of reed, the watching towers and a wooden tracks have been constructed on the lake shore to facilitate the learning of bird species inhabiting the reed beds. One can hear the sound of the Eurasian bittern and in case of good fortune the bearded tit and the horned grebe can be met. Towers for bird watching have also been installed in the Saunja Village and in Haapsalu. Bays of this region are important spawning grounds for the fish of the Väinameri Sea. During the spawning period tens of white-tailed eagles can be seen all at once.
