Beaches of Nõva

The northwestern part of Lääne County may take pride in tremendous beaches between Nõva and Põõsaspea. The Põõsaspea Cape is appreciated by bird watchers. In May millions of migrating waterfowl can be seen, and once again, the long-tailed ducks, scoters and divers are the most abundant.

Sandy beaches take up almost a 10 km long section of the coastline. Sometimes one can hear the sand “singing” when stepping on it. At some distance from the shoreline former coastal ridges appear with old pines torned by heavy maritime winds growing on them. In between the dunes several small and shallow lakes with sandy bottom and fens are situated. Extensive forests and mires come into sight further toward the mainland. There are also two big lakes with sandy bottom – Tänavjärv Lake and Veskijärv Lake, both very popular among holiday-makers. Osprey, golden eagle, whooper swan and black stork can be seen in this area. The rare waterlobelia grows in Tänavjärv Lake. It also provides habitats for crustaceans.
