Äntu lake group comprises seven lakes, all having exceptionally clean water. At Sinijärv Lake, the most transparent of them, one can clearly see the bottom at the depth of 8 metres. The greenish-blue water is extremely calcareous due to the spring situated at the bottom in the northern part of the lake. The floating peat consisting mainly of peat mosses and Carex species continually invades the lake but springs keep the water circulating and slow down the vegetation growth. Flowing through other lakes the Äntu Stream reaches the foot of ancient stronghold of Punamäe. The site consists of three parts, as if three citadels would have been standing side by side. In 1226 the leaders of ancient counties gathered here to meet the Pope’s emissary – the Bishop of Modena.
