Porkuni Lake

The primary shaper of landscape diversity in Porkuni has been the primeval valley. Porkuni Lake lies on the floodplain of the valley. The stronghold and manor of Porkuni are situated nearby. The stronghold has been ruined; only the gate-tower, now accommodating the Limestone Museum has been preserved. The typical outcrop of the limestone of Porkuni formation from the Silurian period can be seen in the vicinity. Porkuni Lake feeds on spring waters. In essence it is an artificial barrage lake, famous for its floating islands. One of the myths tells about haystacks that were shoved into the water by an evil bishop and his slaves. The lake mermaid added some soil to haystacks that consequently started to grow together. Later on, the mermaid dragged also the bishop into the lake where he was supposed to scare away fish from hooks. As a result, the lake became very abundant in fish. Scientifically, floating islands are explained by recurring detachment of small parts of peatland from the increasingly swampy lakeshore. With strong wind these may go drifting.
