Loosalu bog

The nature track taking hikers to the Loosalu bog represents a good cross-section of typical bog landscape. Half of the extensive mire area of approximately 20 km² is made up of raised bog with the maximum thinckness of peat layer reaching 7 metres. At the periphery of the bog are situated several higher mire islands, while in the middle of the bog plain plateau without trees dominates. Dry depressions in the inner part of the bog designate the places of buried mire islands. The central part of the bog has many bog lakes. The largest one, with an area of 34 hectares and maximum depth of 5 metres, is a relict of a bigger lake. Hence, the lake is older than the bog itself. The highest summit of Northwest Estonia, the Paluküla Hiiemägi, lies in the vicinity of the Loosalu bog. The absolute height of the hill is 106 metres and the relative height reaches 31 metres.
