Kuimetsa karst field of Iida

A good example of karst areas in a forest can be studied in Kuimetsa where a small stream disappears underground and appears again in the distance of 3 km. The karst field with well noticeable karst formations occupies the area of 12 hectares. The underground riverbed is located at the depth of up to 3 metres, enabling to hear the murmur and see the flow of streamwater. The sinkholes mainly have the shape of case, funnel or dish, determined by the facture of the stone blocks. There are 12 separate caves in the area that are too low for standing up. It has been suggested that these karst caves were used as shelters in ancient times. For example, the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia tells about the German incursion in late winter of 1220 when thousands of people were hiding themselves in the caves and were suffocated with smoke.
