Matsimäe–Simisalu Nature Trail

Hikers on nature trails heading from Matsimäe to Simisalu come across the squishing ground of mires and forests, bog pools, old farmsteads and ancient sledding roads. The 10 kilometres long trails can be crossed only by foot and in two ways. At Pühajärve Lake of Matsimäe a nice sandy beach section has been prepared for swimming. Rest of the lakes in the area are surrounded by floating peatlands. The hiking trail ends at the visiting centre of the Kõrvemaa Landscape Reserve in Simisalu. The visiting centre comprises a nice renovated set of farm buildings where accommodation can be booked in advance.

The major part of Kõrvemaa is characterized by plain relief combined with numerous eskers. The natural drainage is inhibited in Kõrvemaa region resulting in extensive paludification. In some places the smaller moraine formations and drumlins have been buried under the growing peat layer. The higher landforms have persisted as islands in the midst of mires. Formerly, these islands had human settlement, typically consisting of one or two farmsteads. Today the area has become uninhabited.
