The major part of the island consists of pine forests. Behind the high former beach ridges some mires have evolved. The grasslands along the coast remind of the former pastures. The island’s flora is rather imposing – more than 400 vascular plant species have been found here. Surrounded by pine forests, a peculiar group of deciduous trees, the so-called Garden of Danish King, grows on the island. Many legends are associated with this place. On the numerous concrete ruins of former military fortification several lichen and moss species can be found. The stony abrasive western coast develops into more quiet seashore in the eastern part of the island with several nice sandy beaches. The highest elevations emerge in the central part of the island, arriving at 28 metres above sea level. Three hiking trails and a training center of natural history have been established on the island.
