Teringi Bog

The most peculiar feature of the Teringi Mire stretching out to the Latvian border is the presence of the north-south directed bog islands. These islands were formerly used as shelters and a sledding was going to Latvia across them. The hiking path with sections of wooden track in swampy places guides hikers from one island to another. In the southeastern part of the bog there is a nice Lake Alatsi (5 ha) with floating embankments. The entire area is distant from human settlements. Also a great part of the forests has remained unmanaged due to the lack of access roads. This has contributed to the welfare of wildlife, including mammals such as wild boars, beavers and moose. The name of one of the islands is Ussisaar Island (“Snake’s Island”), so called by the local people, as many vipers can be encountered there right at the hiking path.
