Narva River

The Narva River can be classified as large in terms of the flow rate that is higher than in all other Estonian rivers altogether. The outflow from the Lake Peipsi to the Gulf of Finland goes through the Narva River. Two thirds of the river’s catchment area is in the possession of Russia. The Narva River is 77 km long. On its route it falls 30 metres. The fall degree is particularly notable in the region of Omuti rapids and near the waterfall situated in the town of Narva. The waterfall of Narva was once considered to be one of the most abundant in Europe. The width of the waterfall at the western side of the river (i.e. in Estonia) was roughly 70 metres and 130 metres at the eastern river section in Russia. The height of the waterfall was 3-6 meteres. The waterfall practically ceased to exist after the construction of hydroelectric plant in Russian side of the riverbank in 1950s. The plant diverts the water from the natural riverbed into the new channel leaving the terraces and the canyons dry most of the time. At the same time, a new artificial water body, the so-called Narva Sea, has attached itself to the river due to damming. The Narva Reservoir is the third biggest lake in Estonia. The river is navigable in the section downstream of the road bridge. Boating and fishing can be performed in any place. Historically, the most important fish in terms of fishing was sturgeon, also depicted on the municipal coat of arms. Nowadays the most important fish in the Narva River is lamprey.
