Sinimäed Hills

The geographical position of the Sinimäed Hills in the narrow strips of land between the Gulf of Finland and extensive mires of Alutaguse has been crucial in the history of this area. It is a good place for strategic control over the Tallinn-Narva road. That is the reason why many battles have been held here.
The Sinimäed Hills are interesting also geologically. Curiously, huge limestone blocks forming the core of the hills are located at the elevation of 50 metres higher than with their initial position. Whether the endogenous crustal factors or the forces of continental ice sheet are to blame for this still needs further investigation. The northern slopes of the hills are almost vertical in some places, mounting at up to 30 metres and as such reminding a coastal cliffs. The layers of limestone are abnormally inclined, as if they have been plicated. Several other bedrock mounds can be found elsewhere in the area, as the entire region lies upon the area of tectonic fault.
